Apple puts M6 in the 14-inch MacBook Pro: up to 32 GB and 170 GB/s, from $1,999

What happened
Apple announced the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on October 27, with pre-orders from October 28 and availability from November 6. The M6 has a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, with 16 GB of unified memory standard, up to 32 GB, and up to 170 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Apple says on-device AI workloads such as LLM prompt processing run up to 25 percent faster than on M5, and time to first token is up to 1.3x faster than the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5. It starts at $1,999 in the US ($1,899 with education pricing).
Why it matters locally: The M6 already shipped in the Mac mini in September; this brings the same chip to a laptop, but the 32 GB ceiling still limits it to small and mid-size quantized models.
Three ways to read it
For the market
This is Apple's entry-level MacBook Pro, so for local AI it likely competes more with Windows laptops on AMD Ryzen AI and NVIDIA RTX Spark than with Apple's own M5 Pro and Max models, which offer more memory. In our data RTX Spark laptops go up to 128 GB at 300 GB/s, so buyers who mainly want large models will probably still look at higher tiers.
In plain words
Apple's new laptop chip answers AI questions a bit faster than last year's and lasts up to 24 hours on a charge. It is a good machine for small AI helpers that run without the internet, but its memory is like a medium-sized desk: fine for everyday work, too small for the biggest AI models.
For practitioners
Plan around the memory, not the chip: 16 GB is the base and 32 GB the maximum, and macOS only lets the GPU use part of it by default, so pick 4-bit quantized models that leave room for context rather than the largest model that loads. Apple's AI gains are for prompt processing (time to first token), so test long-document and RAG prompts in MLX or llama.cpp, where the GPU Neural Accelerators matter most.
