Apple's OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro keeps M5 Pro and M5 Max, with up to 128 GB, from $2,899

What happened
Apple announced the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display on October 28, in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, with a tandem OLED panel and touch input on a Mac for the first time. It uses M5 Pro or M5 Max rather than a new chip, with up to 128 GB of unified memory and up to 16 TB of storage. Prices start at $2,899 (14-inch M5 Pro), $3,399 (16-inch M5 Pro), $4,499 (14-inch M5 Max) and $4,799 (16-inch M5 Max). Pre-orders opened October 28 in 30 countries and regions, with availability from November 6.
Why it matters locally: For running models locally this is a new screen on known silicon: memory tops out at 128 GB and bandwidth at 614 GB/s, the same M5 Max limits Apple lists for the current MacBook Pro.
Three ways to read it
For the market
Apple's own lineup is now the clearest comparison: the M6 14-inch from $1,999 stops at 32 GB and 170 GB/s, while the OLED M5 Max reaches 128 GB and 614 GB/s. Against RTX Spark laptops, which also reach 128 GB, the M5 Max has about twice the 300 GB/s bandwidth in our data, though Windows and CUDA users may still prefer NVIDIA's route.
In plain words
Apple's best laptop got a brighter screen you can touch, and it weighs less. The engine inside is the same one Apple already sold, so for AI work it is like a nicer car body on the same motor.
For practitioners
Pick by memory tier: on the 40-core GPU M5 Max, Apple lists 48, 64 or 128 GB at 614 GB/s, while the 32-core version is 36 GB only at 460 GB/s, and M5 Pro stops at 64 GB and 307 GB/s. Apple says M5 Max runs LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters on device, but that is a vendor claim with no figures, so test your own quant and context length, and remember macOS limits how much memory the GPU can wire by default.
